Richard Wagner’s Tannhäuser is a tale of a mediaeval knight and poet torn between the profane love of the goddess Venus and sacred love of pure Elizabeth. In his adaptation of the opera, the director Laco Adamik shifts the action so that it focuses on contemporary dilemmas such as the conflict between culture and nature, or sensuality and spirituality. According to Bogusław Nowak, Kraków Opera’s director, the premiere performance on 9 June 2016 was a significant event: Tannhäuser was the first opera by Wagner staged by the Cracovian theatre.
